Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that David S. Helgren, 25, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to four years in federal prison for attempted possession with intent to distribute 445 grams of MDMA (ecstasy). Helgren pleaded guilty to this charge on May 1, 2012.

On March 8, 2010, the Madison Carrier Office received a Canada Post Priority Mail parcel from British Columbia, Canada, addressed to D. Helgren at an address in Madison. After obtaining a search warrant to search the parcel, law enforcement agents found 445 grams of MDMA (ecstasy) disguised as cupcake ingredients.

Later in the investigation, agents obtained a search warrant for Helgren’s home. Approximately 1,600 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, MDMA, and marijuana were found in the home.

The charges against Helgren were the result of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Drug Enforcement Administration. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney David J. Reinhard.
